Vintage Russian Palekh hand-painted lacquer box depicting Yaroslav the Wise (Ярослав Мудрый) – the famous medieval ruler and Grand Prince of Kyiv and Novgorod. The scene shows the prince in richly decorated robes, surrounded by attendants and stylized architecture, painted in the classic Palekh manner with elongated figures, bright tempera colors and delicate gold highlights on a deep black ground. Along the lower edge of the lid the box is inscribed in Cyrillic: “Palekh – Yaroslav Mudry – isp. Dmitriev” (Palekh – Yaroslav the Wise – painted by Dmitriev), confirming both the village and the artist. The box is made of traditional papier-mâché, covered with multiple layers of lacquer. The inside is finished in glossy red lacquer and the lid is hinged. This is a fine and rather uncommon historical subject, as most Russian lacquer boxes feature fairy-tale scenes – which makes this piece especially interesting for collectors of Russian history and lacquer miniature art. Details: – Origin: Russia, Palekh lacquer miniature school – Subject: Yaroslav the Wise (medieval Grand Prince of Kyiv and Novgorod) – Artist: Dmitriev (signed) – Materials: papier-mâché, tempera paints, gold leaf, lacquer – Interior: red lacquer, hinged lid – Approximate size: about 7” long × 5” wide – Era: Soviet period Condition: Vintage condition with normal wear from age and use. The painting and gold ornament remain bright and attractive. Light surface scratches and small rubs to the black lacquer can be seen under strong light. Minor edge and corner wear/chips to the lacquer on the feet and along some raised edges, but no major cracks or structural damage noted. Interior red lacquer is clean and glossy with a few small marks from use. Please see all photos as they are part of the description. Why collectors like it: – True Palekh lacquer miniature, not a modern print – Signed by the artist, which adds provenance – Unusual historical subject (Yaroslav the Wise) rather than a common fairy-tale scene – Large, displayable
size – works both as an art object and a functional jewelry/keepsake box A beautiful, hand-painted Russian lacquer box that will make a strong addition to any collection of Palekh, Russian folk art or historical memorabilia.
